Greg Sankey to headline College Football Insider Luncheon

By: Eric SanInocencio

Southeastern Conference commissioner Greg Sankey is coming to Houston.

The newly appointed Sankey, who began his tenure as the SEC’s eighth ever commissioner on July 1st, will be the guest speaker at this year’s College Football Insider Luncheon.

The event, presented by Aramark, will serve as the kickoff of a weekend full of festivities. Sankey will join a list of prominent media and VIPs at the event, previewing the upcoming AdvoCare Texas Kickoff featuring the No. 15 ranked Arizona State Sun Devils and the Texas A&M Aggies. The matchup, listed by NFL.com as the 14th best game of the 2015 college football season, once again showcases Houston as one of the premier event hosts in the entire nation.

The newly minted SEC Commissioner is familiar with the state of Texas, having spent seven years as the Commissioner of the Southland Conference. Sankey was hired by the SEC in 2002, serving in the league’s compliance department. In 2012, he was then promoted to the role of Executive Associate Commissioner and Chief Operating Officer for the league office.

Sankey has been an integral part of the SEC’s efforts to reshape the league’s governance, enforcement and compliance program, and he has also directed the SEC’s championships staff. He is active within the NCAA committee structure, which includes his current service on the Division I Legislative Council, Committee on Academic Performance and the NCAA Committee on Infractions for which he currently serves as chairman.

He takes over for the highly successful Mike Slive, who is widely regarded as one of the best commissioners in the history of college athletics. This upcoming game marks the third straight time an SEC team has played in the AdvoCare Texas Kickoff. Mississippi State (2013) and LSU (2014) have both competed in the contest, with the Tigers capturing a 28-24 win over Big Ten foe Wisconsin. Former Tiger and current Houston Texan Kenny Hilliard scored on a 28-yard touchdown run to help seal the victory.
