AdvoCare Texas Kickoff teams with Phillips 66 and Barbara Bush Foundation for Book Blitz

Drive at Reliant Stadium will Restock School Libraries Devastated by Tornadoes

HOUSTON, August 27, 2013 – The AdvoCare Texas Kickoff is teaming with Phillips 66 and the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy to rally football fans to donate books to elementary schools hit by tornadoes earlier this year. The Phillips 66 Book Blitz will collect books from ticketholders prior to the game at Reliant Stadium on August 31.

The inaugural AdvoCare Texas Kickoff pits Mississippi State against Oklahoma State on the field, but it’s the children of those states who are in need of a win. The communities of Oak Grove and Thames Elementary Schools in Mississippi were devastated by a tornado in February. In May, Briarwood and Plaza Towers Elementary Schools in Moore, Okla., were also impacted by a large tornado that tore through the region.

Lone Star Sports Entertainment is an event management company that was formed to position the city of Houston and Reliant Stadium as a premier destination for concerts, international soccer matches and college football games, headlined by the AdvoCare Texas Kickoff and the Texas Bowl.

“The Robert and Janice McNair Foundation have been loyal supporters of reading and family literacy,” said Bob McNair, owner of the Houston Texans and Lone Star Sports & Entertainment. “We are pleased that the Phillips 66 Book Blitz, in partnership with the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacywill help provide critically needed books and resources for elementary schools in Oklahoma and Mississippi that were recently devastated.”

Organizers of the Phillips 66 Book Blitz are asking fans to donate unused books appropriate for students from kindergarten to 6th grade. Volunteers at the game will accept books from fans beginning at 12:30 p.m. Two book collection points will be set up in front of Budweiser Plaza just north of the blue parking lot.  Additionally, anyone who wants to support the book drive can donate funds at

“My mother has been a tireless advocate for family literacy,” said Neil Bush, co-chair of the Celebration of Reading. “She knows that reading can bring joy and comfort to families as they recover from the tragedy of these storms – as well as teach important life skills as they move forward. I’m proud that the city my wife, Maria, and I call home is coming together to help these children.”

Neil Bush will be available to discuss the Phillips 66 Book Blitz on Thursday, August 28. Interested media may contact Carrie Eickenroht with Empower Events at 713-467-2812, or
