NFL stars to represent Alma Maters prior to kickoff

NFL STARS J.J. WATT, PATRICK PETERSON TO SERVE AS HONORARY CAPTAINS FOR ADVOCARE TEXAS KICKOFF

HOUSTON – Two of the NFL’s biggest defensive stars and most prominent alumni in Wisconsin and LSU football history will serve as honorary captains when the two schools meet in the AdvoCare Texas Kickoff at NRG Stadium on Aug. 30. Former Wisconsin Badger defensive end J.J. Watt of the Houston Texans and former LSU Tiger cornerback Patrick Peterson of the Arizona Cardinals will represent their schools along with representatives of AdvoCare at midfield prior to the 8 p.m. CT kickoff.

The former 2011 first-round draft picks both have siblings suiting up for their respective alma maters in the season opener for both schools. Watt’s younger brothers, T.J. and Derek, play tight end and fullback, respectively, for Wisconsin. Peterson’s brother, Avery, plays wide receiver for LSU.

Watt, a two-time All-Pro and Pro Bowler, and the 2012 NFL Defensive Player of the Year, was the 11th overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft and played at Wisconsin from 2009-10. At Wisconsin, Watt racked up 106 total tackles, 36.5 tackles for loss, and 11.5 sacks and won the Ronnie Lott Trophy given to the Defensive Impact Player of the Year. With the Houston Texans, Watt has compiled 182 total tackles, 27 passes defensed, and 36.5 sacks. He had 82 total tackles and led the NFL with 20.5 sacks in 2012.

Peterson, a three-time Pro Bowler and two-time All-Pro, Peterson, was drafted fifth overall by Arizona in the 2011 NFL Draft and attended LSU from 2008-2010. In his collegiate career, Peterson had 135 total tackles, 29 passes defensed, and 7 interceptions and won the Bednarik Award, the Thorpe Award, and was an All-American in 2010. With the Arizona Cardinals, Peterson has 161 total tackles, 43 passes defensed, and 12 interceptions.

Wisconsin and LSU have played twice previously, with the Tigers prevailing both times. LSU won, 38-28, on Sept. 25, 1971 in Madison and was victorious again the following season, 27-7, in Baton Rouge.
