Texas A&M Holds Special Place on Texans Roster

By: Ellie Pardee

For the Houston Texans, special teams is closely connected to Texas A&M. Two graduates of A&M, kicker Randy Bullock and punter Shane Lechler are integral parts of the Texans roster, and also are proud Aggies.

Bullock began his NFL career three years ago when he was drafted by the Texans in the fifth round of the 2012 NFL Draft. He was placed on injured reserve in his first season after suffering a leg injury in the preseason, but quickly worked his way into a starting spot the following season. In his first season on the field, the A&M graduate made 26 field goals, tying Kris Brown for the fifth highest single-season total in franchise history. Bullock concluded the 2013 season with 12 consecutive field goals, once again tying for the fifth-longest streak in franchise history. In the past two seasons, Bullock moved into the fifth spot on the all-time scoring list for the franchise and made 16 consecutive field goals between November 2013 and September2014, which ranks second in team history. He also holds the franchise record for field goals made and points scored in a game.

At Texas A&M, Bullock made a lot of history. He holds the Aggies’ career scoring record with 365 points, and set a school scoring record with 142 points in a season, which ranks second in Big XII history.

Lechler is the most veteran member of the Texans and has been a vital part of special teams for the past two seasons. He was drafted by the Oakland Raiders in the fifth round of 2000 NFL Draft and spent 13 seasons with the Raiders before being signed by the Texans. Lechler has been one of the best punters in NFL History. He holds the best gross punting average ever at 47.5 and was the fastest player in NFL history to reach 50,000 yards punting. Lechler is also a seven-time Pro Bowler and six-time All-Pro. The Aggie currently holds the longest active streak of games played in in the NFL with 205 consecutive games.

During his time at Texas A&M, Lechler set an NCAA record for career punting average (44.7), was a two-time All-American and a three-time first-team All-Big 12 selection.

Bullock and Lechler are two of 19 Aggies who were on NFL rosters last season.

The Texas A&M Aggies will kick off their season against the Arizona State Sun Devils on September 5th in the AdvoCare Texas Kickoff at NRG Stadium. To purchase your tickets, call 832-667-2390 or click here.
