UH: Houston Takeover
By: John Harris
At a coaches clinic in February 2014, one of the co-directors of the Lone Star Coaching clinic was introducing the next speaker, a former B1G defensive coordinator. As he did, he told a story about that coach and current University of Houston head coach Tom Herman when those two were graduate assistants together at the University of Texas. Even though, Herman wasn’t in the building, it was clear that he left an impression on the co-director. I remember him saying that Herman was as sure about himself as any young coach he had ever been around and that it was just a matter of time before both guys were head coaches.
One year later, Herman took over as the head coach at the University of Houston and vowed to change the culture and make the Cougars a consistent winner. He called it the Houston Takeover.
It’s working, too.
It started back in the spring when he chained the doors to the locker room, telling the team that it had to earn its way back in. The story caught fire around the country, even though Herman told me he didn’t think it would make a ripple. Either way, the Cougars followed Herman’s lead and embody his bravado and chutzpah out on the field. Last weekend, Herman’s Coogs flew to Louisville and upset the Cardinals 34-31 for Herman’s first signature win, two weeks into the 2015 season.
I sat with Herman at a luncheon this past summer, just prior to the start of training camp, and I was struck by his honest assessment of all things football, University of Houston and life in general. I left there thinking that U of H found the perfect coach to take it to a different level.
He’s definitely taking over the city of Houston.
