Way Too Early 2016 AdvoCare Texas Kickoff Preview

The thing with college football scheduling is that games must be signed so far in advance, it’s often unclear what we can expect from said contest. Games are often agreed upon years before the actual game, even non-conference interconference games like the AdvoCare Texas Kickoff. As such, when the 2016 AdvoCare Texas Kickoff matchup between Oklahoma and the University of Houston was announced, I’ll be honest, I was a bit skeptical.

The University of Houston struggled through a 6-6 year in 2014, while Oklahoma ended the 2014 campaign with a 40-6 loss to Clemson in the Russell Athletic Bowl. So, my worry, in some sense, was warranted.

Then, the 2015 season eliminated any and all doubt. Tom Herman’s Houston Cougars went from 6-6 Armed Forces Bowl winners to 13-1 AAC and New Year’s Six Bowl champions. Bob Stoops’ Sooners went on a dominating run through the Big 12 and right on into the second annual college football playoff as the Big 12 champions.

Throw in the potential quarterback matchup between Greg Ward Jr. and Baker Mayfield and it’s clear I was 1,000% wrong about this battle of red and crimson. Furthemore, not only was I wrong about the 2016 AdvoCare Texas Kickoff, it may be the best matchup in the month of September of 2016. Quite honestly, this could be a matchup of pre-season top 15 teams and, presumably, that won’t happen anywhere else but at NRG Stadium in Houston.

Herman. Stoops. Ward. Mayfield. Cougars. Sooners.

September 2016 can’t get here fast enough.
